The Casa Loma Orchestra

A Pioneering American Dance Band

The Casa Loma Orchestra was a leading American dance band from 1929 to 1963, standing out as one of North America's top bands until swing music surged in 1935.

After World War II, declining interest in big bands led to their disbandment in 1947. The orchestra returned from 1957 to 1963 as a Hollywood studio group under Glen Gray, making select live and TV appearances and recording fifteen LPs for Capitol Records before Gray's death ended the band in 1963.

The Life and Legacy of Carl Sigman

Carl Sigman was a pianist, composer, and lyricist whose songs were performed by a variety of artists, including Kenny Drew, Mel Tormé, Dottie West, Joni Mitchell, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Though trained in law, Sigman followed his passion for music, encouraged by Johnny Mercer.

Sigman wrote lyrics for Glenn Miller’s “Pennsylvania 6-5000” in 1940 and contributed “Love Lies,” recorded by Sinatra and Dorsey. During WWII, he wrote the official song for the 82nd Airborne. Post-war, he saw hits like “Ballerina,” “Civilization,” “Enjoy Yourself,” and “My Heart Cries for You.” He adapted Charles G. Dawes’s piece into “It’s All in the Game,” and gave lyrics to “Ebb Tide,” “Dream Along with Me,” “Arrivederci, Roma,” and “Where Do I Begin” from Love Story.

Sigman’s jazz collaborations include “All Too Soon” with Duke Ellington, “If You Could See Me Now” with Tadd Dameron, “Crazy He Calls Me” (Billie Holiday), “I Could Have Told You” (Sinatra), and “Manha de Carnival.” His son Michael compiled a 3-CD collection from Sigman’s catalogue of roughly 800 songs, affirming his reputation as a great American songwriter.

With Guest Drew Neirin & The Star Shaped Pages

Drew Neirin is a blues guitarist, soul singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Bath, Somerset, UK. Raised in Manchester, the Isle of Skye, and Worcestershire, Drew began music young, with piano at age five and guitar at eleven. Classic blues and RnB shaped his early musical foundation.

As a teenager, Drew played in rock, punk, and metal bands before pursuing an acoustic singer-songwriter path, inspired by artists like Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, Amos Lee, Eric Clapton’s ‘Unplugged’, and bands such as The Police, Reef, and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Returning to electric guitar, Drew balanced his influences, crediting Tom Morello, John Mayer, and Eric Clapton for guitar, and Bob Marley, Norah Jones, James Brown, and Jack Johnson for vocals.

He is recognised for combining soulful, strong vocals with guitar playing reminiscent of great twentieth-century blues artists.

THE BLUEBIRD'S

Tom is the driving force behind the band. Despite his youth, he possesses a deep and profound love for the blues, which is evident in both his playing and his songwriting. His influences are vast and significant, including all of the Kings, Peter Green, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, and many more. However, Tom’s style is not simply a blend of these legendary guitarists; rather, he skilfully combines elements from each to forge a unique and distinctive sound.

Tom’s live performances are intense and mesmerising. He has an extraordinary ability to gently draw the audience into his world, revealing the wonders that reside within. There is no need for extravagant stage antics—no playing upside down, behind his back, or with his teeth—because Tom does not rely on gimmicks. Instead, his passion and fire captivate and consume everyone who wishes to join him on his musical journey.
